Run by husband-and-wife team Iain and Val, the bakery was originally inspired by their late neighbour Nancy, who inspired them to enter Iain’s shortbread into a local contest.
The reception to Iain’s baked goods was so warm that he began making more, soon realising he might just have the recipe for a new business.
Iain’s path wasn’t straightforward. An IT manager before the pandemic, he has also overcome a stroke in recent years. But determined not to compromise the process, he still insists on making each batch by hand, using the strict family recipe handed down from his mother and grandfather – a talented baker in the North East.
“My granny couldn’t cook at all,” Iain laughs, “but between my mum and my grandad, I learned what real baking should be.”
Alongside Iain’s signature shortbread, Val adds her own touch of creativity with cakes and birthday cakes, making Whyte’s a go-to for both everyday indulgence and special occasions.

The couple rent baking space at Tullibody Community Garden, baking a few days a week to meet growing demand. Support from the local community was immediate – with their shortbread even stocked on the shelves of Alloa Hub, where Val also works as a Development Officer.
At one point, a local fishmonger also sold the treats – and they quickly became such a hit that people started coming in just for the shortbread!
Now, Whyte’s signature bakes are also found at Alloa Hub, a bustling community space, and the popularity of their products continues to spread through word of mouth.
For Iain, shortbread isn’t just a bake – it’s a connection to family, heritage and home.
“It was always my favourite growing up,” he says. “Shortbread is the taste of Scotland.
“We make it in the perfect size to enjoy with a cup of tea – maybe too perfect, as I can’t resist it myself!”
