The Japanese Garden at Cowden was originally created in the early 20th century by Scottish adventurer Ella Christie and designed by pioneering Japanese garden designer Taki Handa. Following extensive restoration, it is now open to the public as a unique visitor destination, combining landscaped gardens, woodland walks and historic features.
Within this tranquil landscape, the Cowden Tearoom welcomes visitors throughout the garden’s opening season for coffee, lunch, light bites and afternoon tea. It offers relaxed, seasonal dining alongside home baking and inclusive menu options, including gluten-free and vegan dishes, making it an integral part of the overall visitor experience.

The tearoom’s specials menu rotates approximately every six weeks, with a different offering weekly reflecting the seasons and availability of ingredients. Dishes are built around freshness and sustainability, with an emphasis on Scottish sourcing wherever possible.
Gluten-free and vegan options are always available, with the team aiming to ensure that visitors with dietary requirements still enjoy meaningful choice across the menu.
“We try to cater for everyone, whether that’s gluten-free, vegan or other dietary requirements,” says Rachael McGaffney, Cowden Manager. “The menu changes with the seasons, but quality and inclusivity are always central to what we do.”
A standout favourite with visitors is the coronation chickpea sandwich, a popular vegan option with customers.
Home baking is a key part of the tearoom’s appeal, with cakes and sweet treats prepared on site daily.
Carrot cake and Victoria sponge are among the most popular items, frequently selling out during busy periods.
“Our carrot cake and chocolate cake are two of our most popular bakes. They really do fly off the shelf,” adds Rachael McGaffney.
Afternoon tea is also available, priced at £33 including entry to the gardens, making it a popular choice for celebrations and special visits, available October – March.

Dining at the tearoom is closely connected to exploring the wider gardens, with visitors encouraged to enjoy the seven-acre Japanese Garden, surrounding woodland walks, children’s play park and craft cabin before or after their meal.
Cowden Tearoom operates as part of the visitor attraction and booking is recommended during busy periods.
On peak days, priority is given to garden ticket holders to ensure a smooth visitor experience across the site.
The tearoom continues to evolve its offering, with plans to introduce exclusive private afternoon tea experiences in the Pavilion through autumn and winter.
These intimate bookings will accommodate up to eight guests, offering views across the gardens and a more personalised dining experience.
The focus remains on seasonal cooking, inclusive menus and high-quality Scottish produce, delivered in a relaxed and welcoming setting.
